After graduating college, I decided to take up contemporary portraiture painting. It was a way to express my feelings and worked as an outlet for emotions that I hadn't processed yet. This particular portrait wasn’t premeditated, but what it represents is far more than just a painting. The young lady in blue signifies those who are fighting for their rights and justice in the face of discrimination. She stands strong among the trees. Despite the discrimination that I endured during this time at a micro level (and sometimes even more overtly), I felt empowered rather than discouraged. This motivates me every day to use art as way to bring about awareness, understanding, and positive change on this critical social issue.
